The newly elected President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK/Ireland, High Chief Chima Oparaugo, has renewed his strong appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria to adopt a political solution concerning the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in the interest of national unity, peace, and reconciliation.

High Chief Oparaugo expressed full alignment with the position of the President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, who recently reiterated that a political solution remains the most responsible, constructive, and effective pathway toward resolving the long-standing issues surrounding Kanu’s case.

According to High Chief Oparaugo, many Nigerians particularly within the South-East view Kanu’s prolonged detention as a troubling symbol of marginalisation, unequal treatment, and the government’s failure to address legitimate sociopolitical concerns through inclusive dialogue.

Reacting to the reported life imprisonment sentence issued against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, High Chief Oparaugo strongly condemned the judgment, stressing that the detention and harsh sentencing do not advance peace or national harmony. He emphasised that only a political solution can promote justice, restore trust, and accelerate efforts toward enduring nation-building.

“This is a critical moment for Nigeria”, he said. The federal government must embrace justice, fairness, and reconciliation, according to him, these are the true pillars of sustainable peace. Releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu through a political settlement would not indicate weakness but would instead demonstrate national maturity and statesmanship.

High Chief Oparaugo noted that this call reflects the collective aspiration of the Igbo people and many well-meaning Nigerians across regions who yearn for a stable, inclusive, and united nation.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK & Ireland urges the Federal Government to seize this moment to rebuild confidence, strengthen national cohesion, and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values by taking decisive steps toward a peaceful and political resolution, he stated.
