In a decisive diplomatic move, Nigerians across the United Kingdom under the auspices of “Concerned Nigerians for Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu” have formally engaged the UK Government on the continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Nigerian authorities. The group has involved the Minister of State for International Development and Africa, Baroness Chapman, to express grave concern over the violation of Kanu’s fundamental rights and the Nigerian government’s disregard for judicial pronouncements, Ogene Ndigbo Newspaper has gathered.

In a statement by Hon. Ejike Ikezuagu, Convener of Concerned Nigerians for Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, he said,

“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is no longer merely a legal matter, it has become a moral and conscientious imperative,”

He said “Every legitimate and peaceful avenue must be pursued to ensure that the attention of all relevant government authorities in the United Kingdom and beyond is drawn to this grave injustice. The unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not only a legal necessity; it is a moral obligation that speaks to the conscience of democratic societies.”

This statement follows the group’s recent engagement with Baroness Chapman, UK Minister of State for International Development and Africa, as part of a broader diplomatic and public mobilization campaign. The group is organizing a major peaceful protest in London on November 1, 2025, to amplify the call for justice and international accountability.

Hon. Ikezuagu has been in sustained dialogue with UK Member of Parliament, Abena Oppong-Asare, regarding the unlawful detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Nigerian government. These discussions have focused on diplomatic avenues and legislative pressure to secure Kanu’s unconditional release.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a British citizen, Hon. Ikezuagu emphasized “It is incumbent upon the UK Government to deploy every legitimate effort to ensure his release and uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and international responsibility.”

During his engagement with UK Member of Parliament Abena Oppong-Asare, Hon. Ikezuagu drew attention to the deeply troubling circumstances surrounding Kanu’s detention. He emphasized that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a British citizen, was abducted in Kenya in 2021 and forcibly transferred to Nigeria in a manner widely regarded as a violation of international law and due process. Despite multiple court rulings affirming his rights, Kanu remains in detention, raising urgent concerns about judicial independence, human rights, and regional stability.

UK Member of Parliament Abena Oppong-Asare has confirmed that Baroness Chapman, Minister of State for International Development and Africa, is fully aware of the circumstances surrounding Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s detention.

According to MP Abena, “steps are being taken to find a resolution to the matter.” This assurance follows sustained engagement by Hon. Ikezuagu and the Concerned Nigerians for the Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who have consistently urged the UK Government to uphold its responsibilities toward a British citizen facing prolonged and unlawful detention abroad.

Hon. Ikezuagu has issued a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians, lovers of freedom, civil society groups, diaspora communities, and all organisations committed to justice and human rights to join the global call for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He urged all interested parties to express their support, share their concerns, and coordinate advocacy efforts by sending an email to:

“This is a collective moral duty,” Hon. Ikezuagu stated. “Let us raise our voices in unity, across borders and backgrounds, to demand justice and uphold the rule of law.”
