A group of Igbo ladies under the auspices of the Elite Golden Ladies UK led by the Founder and President Chief, Dr, Mrs, Nkechi Jefia Okezuruonye last Monday visited the Sickle Cell Society UK to support the people with sickle cell anaemia – a disease that blocks blood flow to the rest of the body.

In interaction with the Chief Executive Officer of the Sickle Cell Society UK, John James and Sandra, the President, Elite Golden Ladies, Dr Okezuruonye expressed her immense concern on the people living with the disease.

She said, she knew a woman with children who had the condition, which led to the death of one of her children because of lack of understanding about the condition. According to her, the incident prompted the decision to visit the Society to find out more about the disease and how the Society is promoting understanding and awareness of the disease, she said.

In her statement, she reiterated the importance of checking genomes before couples have children, saying failure to identify SCD genes of both parents may lead in having children with the disease for the rest of their lives. She advised couples, especially in Africa to identify their SCD genes before having children.

In her remarks, she expressed gratitude to the Sickle Cell Society UK for the life-changing work the organisation has been doing for over decades now, stating her organisation’s willingness to support the Charity through donation and creating public awareness by organising workshops, seminars and conferences.

In the same vein, the Elite Golden Ladies UK has been creating the awareness of another disease known as “Fibromyalgia” – a killer disease, though the disease is incurable, but can be managed to prolong the life of the individual living with the disease.

According to Dr Okezuruonye, her organisation is aiming to support the less-privileged children in Enugu state and Autistic special needs children across the United Kingdom by the grace of God, she said.

She further expressed her gratitude to God for making them attain this great height.

In the same development, she said, Elite Golden Ladies is a group of women with golden and caring hearts, saying the organisation promotes Igbo culture in diaspora to enable their children incline with their historic heritage. The group is aware of the need and desire to live in harmony with themselves in foreign land and desired to establish an organisation that will provide them a common platform for fostering, promoting, protecting and defending their collective interests and the welfare of their children.

The Elite Golden Ladies UK is a non-political and non-religious organization that engages in worthy causes, and supporting organizations as Diabetic Association of Nigeria (DAN), Children Rehabilitation Centre in Hopeville Uturu in Abia State, Nigeria, Ukpo General Hospital in Anambra State, supported Diabetic People in Nkanu, Enugu State, Lilu Widows in Anambra State, The Great Ormond Children’s Hospital in the United Kingdom, and supported Motherless Babies Home Okwelle, Imo State.
