As Nigerians across the globe react over the arrest and arraignment of the former deputy senate president, senator Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu for human trafficking last Thursday in London by the Met police, a UK legal luminary, CJ Oliobi Omali has said, he has no pity nor sympathy for senator Ike Ekweremadu on his arraignment for allegedly attempt to harvest human organ for the benefit of his daughter. This should serve as a wake-up call for all those who have been charged with leading the development of Nigeria but failed woefully over the years.

They abandoned their responsibility for the people and gleefully filling their pockets with the public coffers to become billionaires while the citizens suffer from lack of basic services required for optimum human development, including a standard healthcare services, he said.

CJ Omali described these basic amenities as a “condicio sino qua non” for any society that desires collective development and advancement.

According to the law expert, he said, an Igbo adage says, “those who embark on a journey and in the process defecate in the middle of the pathway, they must travel to return, they must be prepared to be greeted by flies, fouls or unpleasant odour on their way back”.

In a statement delivered to Ogene Ndigbo Newspaper in London, Omali said, Ike Ekweremadu’s current travail is what happens when people entrusted with authority to develop and advance the society fail to do their job and in exchange loot the common coffers and treasury to fantastically enrich themselves.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and his Wife, Beatrice.

He said, had it been that Obasanjo developed the Nigerian healthcare system, perhaps his wife wouldn’t have ventured to seek medical relief in Spain where she died on the process.

He remembered, Umaru Musa Yar’adua and other disappeared Nigerian political and social actors who have gone the way of all mortal seeking medical relief abroad when they could have easily gotten same back home, he said.

The Nigerian political elites and bourgeoisie would have no reason to shuttle abroad for health tourism, or forum shop for health services outside the country if they have done the needful and carried out their function which includes providing or dotting the country with excellent medical institutions and facilities, he noted.

According to CJ Omali, he said, “it is not rocket science to provide a standard medical service like they have in advanced countries for a country that is so richly endowed in all ramifications like Nigeria”.

He said, “many of the medical practitioners working and providing the excellent services they seek in the UK are from Nigeria and other African countries”.

“The major reason they have to emigrate to western countries and not able to provide these same services in their home countries is due largely to the stinking corrupt practices perpetuated by the likes of Ike Ekweremadu who have been in the corridors of power for over two decades with no notable contribution and/or improvements to the public health system of Nigeria as well as in other sectors of the body politic”.

He said, “it is Ike Ekweremadu today and many others tomorrow until we get to learn the true meaning, contours and essence of the word Human development”.

On senator Ike Ekweremadu’s daughter, he said,

“The sick girl Sonia studied and lives in the UK and is thus entitled to free medical care like all who live legally in the UK, and she is on dialysis, on waiting list for transplant according to merit and not according to social status or political influences like in Nigeria. Apparently, the Ekweremadus wanted to fasten things like they would do in Nigeria and brought a donor. But according to NHS ethics and values, the doctor is obliged to ascertain that the donor is related to the donee, is of adult age to give consent (18 in UK) is doing so freely without coercion and/or inducements of any kind and that he fully understands what he is doing”.

According to Omali, he said, the donor must have failed one or more of these tests and the doctor at this point is required to report to safeguarding authorities which include the police, which hence led to their arrest and arraignment.

Omali maintained that the sick Sonia is receiving top grade care and will continue to receive such until her turn to receive matching organ, but blamed his father, stating that, if the father who have spent twenty years as a senator, along with his political colleagues in the government of Nigeria had done their job of providing even the basic healthcare system back in Nigeria, he would have saved himself this ordeal.

He stated that in the UK, the law is no respecter of person, if you commit you pay, he concluded.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu is the only Nigerian politician ever charged in the United Kingdom for human trafficking.
